The Forbidden City, also known as the Imperial Palace, served as the most important seat of the Ming Dynasty, and Qing Dynasty in the later years (1644-1912). It was called so because it was, after all, the imperial palace complex, the place where the emperor resided. Any access to the Forbidden City was not only heavily monitored, most of the subjects were barred from entering the palace complex. The emperor was the only one who could move around the palace complex freely and at any given point of time.
