Car Crash 20 Minute Loop

from the album With God on the Dog Team Trail
This catchy little number has been lost from our repertoire. When I was driving west on I-80 through Nevada with my friend Jason and my ex-girlfriend Paige, we saw what at first looked like a big dust tornado in the median that turned out to be a car flipping over and over again. The man who was driving the car--I recall he looked like the Brawny towel guy--was thrown from his flipping car because he hadn't been wearing a seatbelt and his window was rolled down. He was an enormous fellow, very tall. His shirt and shoes had been torn from his body, and he was bruised, battered, and limping, but otherwise miraculously intact. We pulled over and he sat in the passenger seat of our car, working through his shock. We gave him some water to drink. He was eerily calm and seemed only concerned that his allergy medication was left in the glove box (meanwhile his car was upside down in flames). Paige said that she wanted to see the car blow up (yes, it was a moment of tact on her part), but the tall gentleman replied that since he had just filled the tank, it wouldn't explode; I guess you need some air in the tank to create the explosion. Instead, when the flames reached the gas tank, a fountain of white flame erupted from the car's chassis like a beautiful firework. There were four loud pops as the car burned, and the man calmly explained without looking back at his car that these were likely the tires bursting in the heat. He claimed he had been trying to dodge an animal on the highway, but I don't know This was years and years ago, but I'll never forget the man's preternatural calm. We probably should have put a blanket around him, because he was likely in shock. But we were stupid college kids. -gg
